Let's explore

Elders & Anti-Ageism

Ageism - Actions, rules & ideas that give middle-age adults more power than older adults and children.

SMASH THE KYRIARCHY

Why Act Now?

Elders laid the path for social change so we can make an impact today. They know how to cultivate change that has been nurtured over decades and centuries.

Listening to them it makes it easier for us to replicate their successes and avoid repeating their mistakes.

Elder Accomplice Family Action Toolkit

An Anti-Ageism Toolkit For Activist Kids

If we don't care about an issue, we won't take action. Kids have the right to choose curiosity-provoking resources that connect with our values and abilities.

1. SPARK CURIOSITY

Engage

Learn how this issue impacts us and the people we care about.

2. ASK QUESTIONS

Discuss

Process with adults who are willing to be honest and challenge our assumptions.

3. SET INTENTIONS

Reflect

Transform what we've learned into hands-on creativity.

4. CREATE CHANGE

Act

Step into our power with kid-friendly acts of service.

STEP 1: 5 MINUTES

Spark Curiosity: Pick One Story

Which stories and videos make you interested in learning more about this issue?

Which would you recommend to other kids? Add your own suggestions in the comments below.

STEP 2: 10 MINUTES

Make It Personal: Ask Questions

Ask & answer these questions with an adult who you trust to be honest with you..

Do you...

How do you feel about being the age of a grand, or great-grandparent?

What do the stories you follow tell you life as an older adult will be like?

When...

When older adults are in movies and books, what roles do they play?

Are they main characters with fun lives?

Or are they burdens or supporting characters for younger people?

How...

How do we speak up when others make assumptions about older adults?

Does your age make it easier to advocate for older adults? Harder?

STEP 3: USE WHAT YOU HAVE

From Theory To Real-World: Creative Reflection

Time to move from theory to reality. Use creative play to integrate what we've learned, take responsibility, and own what's within our control.

Pre-K & Elementary

Ancestor Interview

Interactive guidebook for kids with prompts for older adults to share the stories of our ancestors (both biological and chosen).

Elementary

Quiz: Am I Ageist?

A fun 2-minute quiz to see where you sti on the ageism spectrum, via EveryAge Counts.

Elementary+

Ageism Bingo

Evaluate your family bookshelf for ageist tropes using this bingo game - and keep it handy for Family Movie Night.

Elementary+

Agony of the Aged

Review 'Agony of the Aged,' a photo series published 23-year-old Soham Gupta as a 'tribute' to 'remember' older adults, via Al Jazeera in Pictures.

Based on the scenes, poses, shadows, and how they are written about - how do you think this young artist feels about aging?

If you needed help - would you choose to be depicted this way?

How might the photos look different if the subjects took the photos themselves?

Middle School+

Aging-In-Place

Use this interactive map to find a Village to Village Network local to you. Many of these aging-in-place groups organize creative inter-generational community mutual aid projects.

For example, my community has 'Storm Squads' for phone check-ins during disastrous weather. Others connect residents with older adults who volunteer to repair small appliances for free.
